You've visited three centres in one weekend. You heard the same pitch at all three: experienced teachers, structured curriculum, proven results. The brochures look different. The message is identical. And you're no closer to knowing which one is actually better for your child.

This is an honest checklist. We use it to evaluate ourselves, and it applies to every tuition centre in Singapore. Including ours.

Why choosing a tuition centre is harder than it looks

Most centres are competent at marketing. Fewer are transparent about how their classes actually run. The gap between a polished website and the real experience your child will have on a Tuesday afternoon is often large, and the only way to close that gap is to ask the right questions and know what good answers look like.

The centres that are harder to research tend to rely on word of mouth rather than advertising. The ones that are easiest to find online aren't always the best. Your job as a parent is to look past the surface.

We've put this checklist together because we believe the right centre for your child might not be us. What matters is finding the one that actually works.

The 10-point checklist every parent should use

1. Maximum class size (and whether that's enforced)

Ask for the exact maximum. Not "we keep classes small," but the actual number. Then ask whether every class actually hits that cap or whether it's a maximum that's regularly exceeded. A centre that caps at 8 but consistently runs 10 isn't honouring its own policy. Smaller classes only help if the cap is real and enforced.

2. Teacher qualifications and turnover rate

Ask about the qualifications of the teacher your child will actually work with, not the most senior teacher at the centre. Also ask how long the current teaching team has been there. High turnover is a warning sign. Children build learning relationships with specific teachers, and losing that relationship mid-year disrupts progress.

3. Trial class availability

Any centre confident in its teaching should offer a trial class. It gives your child a chance to experience the actual lesson format, pace, and classroom dynamic before you commit. If a centre doesn't offer trials, ask why. The answer is informative.

4. Observation policy

Can you sit in on a live class before enrolling? Can you observe periodically after? Some centres prefer not to have parents watching. That preference is worth noting. The best teachers aren't nervous about being observed. The best learning environments can speak for themselves.

5. Communication frequency with parents

How does the centre communicate with you about your child's progress? Is it a termly report? A WhatsApp message after each session? Or silence until you ask? You should know what's happening in your child's classes without having to chase for information.

6. MOE-aligned curriculum

The content your child covers at tuition should connect directly to what they're doing in school. A centre working from an old syllabus or a generic curriculum not aligned to MOE 2023 guidelines is teaching your child material that might not match their exam format. Ask directly: do you follow the current MOE syllabus for this level and subject?

7. Location and post-school logistics

How does your child get there? If you're relying on public transport, is the centre accessible from your child's school? Does the centre track your child's performance over time and share that data with you in a meaningful way? Not just a grade but an analysis of which topics are weak and how those gaps are being addressed. Good tracking turns tuition from passive attendance into targeted improvement.

10. Refund or pause policy

Life happens. Your child might fall ill for two weeks, or your family might travel during school holidays. Ask what happens to fees you've paid if your child can't attend. A fair centre has a clear, reasonable policy. One that requires full payment regardless of attendance and offers no flexibility is worth factoring into your decision.

The centre's honesty about what it can and can't deliver. A centre that promises grade improvement within four weeks and guarantees specific results is telling you what you want to hear. The truth is that progress depends on frequency, consistency, and a child who's ready to engage. Good centres explain this rather than promise away the complexity.

Whether the teacher remembers your child between sessions. This sounds basic. It's not. We've had parents come to us from larger centres where their child attended for three months and the teacher didn't know their name without checking a register. That's not teaching. It's supervising.

Questions to ask during a trial or tour

These four questions will tell you more than any amount of website browsing:

"What would you do if my child consistently gets a concept right in class but wrong in assessments?" (Tests whether the centre understands the difference between guided and independent learning.)

"Can you give me an example of a student who didn't improve much here, and what happened?" (No centre helps every child. Honesty about limitations is a good sign.)

"How will I know if the teaching approach isn't working for my child?" (Tests whether they monitor and adapt, or assume the method works for everyone.)

"Who specifically will be teaching my child's class?" (Makes sure you're being told about the actual teacher, not a senior figure who won't be in the room.)

Red flags to walk away from

A centre that won't tell you the exact class size. A teacher rotation policy that means your child sees a different face each week. No trial option. No clear communication plan. Fees that are buried in the fine print. And any centre that responds to your questions with a sales pitch instead of a direct answer.

You're not being difficult by asking these things. You're being a parent who's doing this right.

How do I know if a tuition centre is actually MOE-aligned?

Ask them directly which edition of the MOE syllabus they follow and when they last updated their materials. The current primary school Math syllabus was revised in 2023. A centre still teaching from 2018 curriculum materials is working from an outdated framework. You can cross-reference what they say against the MOE website, which publishes current syllabuses for all subjects.

Is it worth paying more for a better-known tuition centre brand?

Not necessarily. Brand recognition in tuition often reflects marketing spend more than teaching quality. The factors in this checklist apply equally to large branded chains and small independent centres. A small centre where your child is known by name and seen as an individual often outperforms a well-branded centre where they're one of 20 faces in a class.

Should I choose a centre near home or near school?

Near school is usually more practical for weekday sessions, especially if your child is taking public transport or relying on a school bus.
